Glenwood Springs, Colo. (Dec. 4, 2014) — "Nile in Denial" is the first book from New Castle artist and author Jessica Meath. Two years in the making, it tells the account of a change-averse caterpillar and his journey to acceptance of his inevitable metamorphosis and transformation. On Saturday, Dec. 13 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., everyone will have the opportunity to read the engaging story, meet the author, and purchase signed books and illustrations. Main Street Gallery, at 817 Grand Avenue in Glenwood, will host the event.

All children who attend the signing event are invited to enter a "Nile in Denial" coloring contest. The winner will receive a signed copy of the book, custom bookmark and a set of book plates.

"We all face changes—that for better or for worse—we often shy away from or wish to avoid," says Meath. "'Nile in Denial' offers a relatable view of the struggle and acceptance of change. I created this story with kids in mind, but it's really an inspiration for people of all ages who are experiencing a move, graduation, new baby or other significant life event."

The book includes a vocabulary list and an informative graphic on the phenomenon of metamorphosis. The accompanying website, www.nilethebutterfly.com, has free tools and resources for parents and educators. In addition to books and prints, Meath has created puzzles, pillows and more themed "Nile in Denial" gift items that are available for purchase online.

"Nile in Denial" books will be available at Main Street Gallery through December, and also for sale at The Book Train at 723 Grand Avenue in Glenwood Springs in 2014 and 2015.

About the author

Jessica Meath is a Colorado native with Midwestern roots. Children’s books have always intrigued her. She has been known to collect them and to be caught browsing the children’s literature sections of libraries and bookstores. When asked what she wanted to be when she grew up the only answer that came to mind was:  an artist. With a degree in art education (despite the persuasive efforts of her English teacher directing her toward a degree in literature) and years of professional experience as a graphic designer, Jessica has now pursued her lifelong dream of author and illustrator. And determined to remain a child at heart, the realm of children's book illustrations and literature is a natural fit.

About the book

"Nile in Denial" is a book about the challenges and rewards of embracing change both physically and metaphorically. Nile is a stubborn caterpillar who resists change in all aspects of his existence until one day he meets an adventurous caterpillar who predicts the greatest transformation of his life. Dealing with this transformation forces Nile to break out of his comfort zone and work past his denial. After all, the one consistent thing in life is change. The book is an excellent learning tool for exploring what adaptation means in our own lives.
